In 2003, the co-founders of Greenplum set out on a mission to build the world's fastest and most scalable database system entirely in software, capable of running across 100s to 1000s of off-the-shelf commodity systems. It seemed like an audacious goal at the time, but over the last six years Greenplum's engineering talent has developed a product capable of supporting the massive-scale data processing requirements of some of the world's most respected enterprises.

Greenplum has pushed the frontier of what's possible through innovative design and development. New capabilities such as the high-performance gNet™ interconnect and Scatter/Gather Streaming™ technology have made it possible for Greenplum's customers to implement massively parallel databases running complex queries and analytical algorithms in parallel over billions and trillions of rows of data. Greenplum's deployments in a wide range of industries have opened a collaboration with the business intelligence and data warehousing departments at these companies. As they build up massive databases to deal with the explosion of data inside their enterprises, Greenplum is working hand-in-hand to expand Greenplum Database in ways that support their near-term and long-term needs.

Greenplum's vision is to support not just the big, fast database requirements of our customers today, but to look ahead and anticipate how these companies can truly get the most value from their data. As enterprises grow to thousands of users and as many different use cases, Greenplum realized that a "cloud" of databases was a very powerful idea as the foundation for the next-generation database, and on that foundation to give each analyst or department within an enterprise individual control over their data. This latest innovation from Greenplum is embodied in the Enterprise Data Cloud™ initiative, virtualizing the analytic infrastructure over a pool of resources and giving users the power, through self-service, to instantiate their own database instances -- without affecting other users.

Greenplum believes that bringing the power of self-service to the data warehouse will be transformational, giving users the potential to access, change and manipulate data in a way that was not possible in the past.
